A Surgical First for Private Healthcare in Malta
Saint James Hospital has performed the first minimally invasive hysterectomy in Malta’s private healthcare sector, marking another significant step forward in the Group’s surgical capabilities.
The procedure, known as vNOTES (Vaginal Natural Orifice Transluminal Endoscopic Surgery), was carried out by a six-member team led by consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist Dr Johann Craus.
The technique allows surgeons to remove the uterus entirely through the vagina using specialised instruments and a camera, with no incisions made in the abdomen whatsoever. For eligible patients, the benefits are tangible: less post-operative pain, no external scarring, a shorter hospital stay and a significantly faster return to normal daily activities.
Innovation, Expertise and Teamwork in the Operating Theatre
Dr Craus described the procedure as being at the forefront of gynaecological surgery, and was pleased with how smoothly the first case had gone.
“The surgery was completed more efficiently than expected, thanks to the surgical team’s expertise and the advanced technology available at Saint James Hospital, including its state-of-the-art 4K laparoscopic imaging system.”
Dr Craus added, “It was rewarding to see how the combination of innovation, experience and teamwork came together to achieve an excellent outcome for the patient.”
Beyond hysterectomies, the vNOTES technique can also be applied to selected procedures involving the removal of ovarian cysts or fallopian tubes, though a thorough clinical assessment is required to confirm suitability in every case.
Patients with advanced endometriosis or other complex gynaecological conditions may require a different surgical approach, and Dr Craus is clear that patient safety always drives the decision.
Expanding Access to Advanced Minimally Invasive Care
Hysterectomies are among the more common procedures performed at Saint James Hospitals, which makes the introduction of vNOTES particularly meaningful for the women the Group serves.
