I graduated as an MD in 1984 from the University of Malta Medical School. After two years of practice I started my specialisation training in Ear Nose and Throat Surgery in the universities of Pavia, Italy, and Gottingen and Hannover in Germany, concluded with a research thesis presented in July 1991 when I was appointed European Union Specialist in Otolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery. I returned to Malta and resumed my work at St Luke’s Hospital and was appointed Lecturer in Otolaryngology with the Malta Medical School in 1999 and Consultant in Otolaryngology in the year 2000. In 2003 I was appointed Clinical Director of the Department of Otolaryngology at St Luke’s Hospital, Malta. I was founder member and Chairman of the Malta Institute for Medical Education, which, from 2008 began offering international postgraduate accredited skills courses in most specialties. After further training in Advanced Otology at the Universities of Hannover and Munich, as well as a specialised Cochlear Implant Centre in Mechelen, Belgium, I was in 2010 appointed founder and first Chairman of the Malta Cochlear Implant programme, which offered Cochlear Implant Surgery to Maltese patients, out of Mater Dei Hospital, Malta.
